  • Art

The St. Pius X Art Department curriculum trains all grade level students to appreciate and develop the techniques used in the creation of their own works of art.

Students learn composition and creation of personal/cultural expression through creative individual and group coursework.  Additionally, each year Art Department students work on multiple larger art projects supporting the Drama Department and other school events.

Students will progress over grade levels from art basics to advanced works reflective of historical and cultural and personal contexts, developing a substantial understanding of art creation and lifelong appreciation.

Students in Preschool – 5th Grade attend Art Class weekly.

  • Music

Music at SPXS focuses on the development of the whole child through creative musical expression. This is achieved through singing, playing instruments, rhythmic movement and critical listening. Students in each grade learn foundational music theory and apply these skills to their performance of a variety of songs and genres. This includes the following school-wide events:

    • Mass at St. Pius X Church
    • Celebration of our Lady of Aparecida
    • Winter Concert
    • Living Nativity
    • Spring Concert
    • Kindergarten Graduation

Each of these events provides students with the opportunity to take the skills they’ve learned in class and share them with our community. This aligns with the SPXS mission to develop the whole child and provide students with countless opportunities to grow and succeed.

  • Spanish

    SPANISH AT SPXS

At SPXS, Spanish is taught using the comprehensible input approach. Unlike traditional grammar-based teaching, this approach doesn’t require students to memorize vocabulary lists or conjugations. Instead, students learn by hearing and understanding Spanish that is clear, meaningful, and engaging.

In the classrooms, Spanish is made comprehensible and fun through storytelling, crafting stories as a class, singing songs, exploring culture and current events, discussing students’ lives, watching short films, and playing games. All activities are designed to be enjoyable, captivating, and easy for students to understand.

Language learning in the early years happens mostly through reading and listening activities, which is why about 90% of classes are conducted in Spanish, even for the youngest learners in kindergarten.

The goal is for students to connect with the language, enjoy the culture, and have fun while learning. Our teacher, Mrs. Sullivan, is a native speaker from Colombia who loves sharing her heritage and helping students develop a lifelong love for Spanish and for the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries
