Fall Happenings in Grade One
In Reading we are working on Context Clues, Cause and Effect, Predicting, Setting, and Author's Purpose.
Students should be reading at home nightly! This is so very important! In phonics we are still focusing on short vowels. We are also practicing final consonants, plurals, and inflected ending -ing. This unit's high frequency words are listed below.
These are words your child should be able to read. These are cumulative and come home each week in your child's homework folder.
| away | come | down |
| no | will | all |
| are | find | make |
| play | did | me |
| saw | walk | went |
| how | many | on |
| they | why | does |
| he | into | this |
| water | by | eat |
| sing | stop | them |
In Math, your child is at the beginning stages of learning addition and subtraction facts to 12. You may want to begin playing games at home or start using flashcards to help with memorization of facts. At this time though it is absolutely acceptable for first graders to use manipulatives, a number line, or even fingers to add and subtract.
In Penmanship it is sometimes difficult to change a handwriting stroke or pencil grip once your child is already accustomed to it. The best way to correct this is to watch your child when he/she is writing and remind him/her the correct way to write. I am constantly reminding the children that their handwriting strokes need to pull toward their belly. A model for correct strokes was included in the Open House packet. If you need another one, just let me know.
Thank you to the parent's of Grade One for all your support!!!
